The Dubai-based Taxi-hailing service Careem Introduces Women Cab drivers in Pakistan on Wednesday 7 December 2016, they launched women Drivers in three big cities, Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore. The taxis, driven by the female drivers will pick up both customers, male and female. It is an unusual initiative in Pakistan where female makes up only 22% of the workforce.
Careem has the larger market share in comparison with the rival Uber, in most of the 32 cities in the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan region in which it works. General Manager of Careem’s in Pakistan Ahmed Usman said that right now 7 women captains had qualified to join the Fleet and more applications are invited from qualified women. Ahmed Usman added,
“We want to give women the same opportunities and the same chance that men have of leveraging our platform to generate healthy income”.
With a customer base of more than 50%, Main Hoon Azaad” is an important step towards the empowerment of women. Aside encouraging freedom of the mobility, Careem plans to enable women by offering them safe job opportunities that make sure more financial independence. The service is launched specially to cater to the needs of the Pakistani women in order to facilitate them to travel with convenient and comfort, while being free totally at ease and stress-free. Careem will start the pilot project with two female Captains in Karachi, three in Lahore and one in Islamabad. The process is underway to expand this plan to increase the fleet and start this project more cities in the future.
Women appreciate the security which Careem gives them, Aasia Abdul Aziz one of the captains said that women security is very important mainly in the city of Karachi. About challenges faced by Pakistani women, she said, “When people start accepting something, when our public realizes that women can do a certain job and are doing it in a commendable manner, then I think it will not be so difficult”.
